When I travel, I don’t gather the kind of souvenirs you'd expect.

I’m collecting something harder to define.

Field fragments, in this case, from a recent trip to India.

Small pieces of place that you won't see listed in a travel guide: a color, a surface, a texture, a receipt, a piece of trash.

Back in the studio, those fragments start to shift. I collage them, I paint over them, I pull them apart and put them back together. It’s less about documenting what happened and more about staying in conversation with it. The work becomes a way of remembering, and then re-remembering.

💬 Sometimes I get asked if the 3-person limit on my Santa Fe retreats is a typo...

It's not a typo.

My 4-day abstract painting retreats are intentionally limited to three participants, not as a luxury detail, but because it's highly effective 🙌🏼

Held in my studio in Santa Fe, we move beyond surface-level exercises and into YOUR actual painting practice. There is structure—targeted exercises, mark making, and acrylic-based exploration—but the core of the workshop is individualized guidance.

👉🏼 Every decision, every stuck moment, every breakthrough is addressed in real time.

This format solves the problems most artists run into:
• You’re stuck mid-painting and don’t know how to move forward
• Your work feels inconsistent and you can’t pinpoint why
• You’re unsure what your voice is—or how to develop it
• You’ve taken workshops before but left without clear direction

The goal is not more information. It’s clarity and application.

We work through how to loosen up without losing intention, how to recognize when a painting is working (and when it’s not), and how to develop criteria you can take back into your studio long after the workshop ends.

And just as important—this is an enjoyable way to do that work.

A group of three creates an environment that’s focused but also relaxed. There’s room for conversation, humor, and the kind of ease that makes it possible to take risks without overthinking every move. You’re not performing, you’re not comparing. You’re working, experimenting, and actually having a good time doing it.

I’ve been teaching long enough to know this: travel isn’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay.

I just demoed in a sold-out workshop in North Port, FL I'm co-teaching with Cat Tesla, and the assignment was simple: large, geometric shapes. Bold color. The kind you don't usually reach for unless you've had too much coffee or a minor identity crisis. 😎

This wasn't about making a finished painting.

Nobody was there trying to politely behave their way into a masterpiece. We were there to choose colors our inner critic usually hides from us and make shapes so big they practically needed their own ZIP code 📍

By the end, there was a sense of liberation.

It's safe to say, we're all one step closer to larger, wilder and bolder abstracts!
