Join me and Bay Area artists, Carl Heyward and Akiko Suzuki for a transformative 3-day workshop in my Santa Fe studio. Fragments and

Foundations II is a deep dive into the expressive and richly layered world of mixed media collage.

Through hands-on demonstrations, individual guidance, shared dialogue and plenty of studio time, you’ll explore:

 The difference between mixed media and collage—and how they overlap

 Choosing and preparing surfaces and adhesives

 Creating and sourcing dynamic collage papers

 Incorporating mark making and paint

 Strategies for starting, composing, and finishing a piece

 Through the intersection of paint, collage and fiber, focusing on translating ideas from smaller works onto larger, more complex surfaces

 Cultivating a personal approach to mixed media, developing your authentic voice in this medium

While the components of mixed media :  painting / collage / assemblage / fiber works ( or textile works ) are or can be independent autonomous genres we encourage their intersection and co-mingling via the specialized skills  of the 3 instructors who navigate into true mixed-media works  seamlessly creating balanced vibrant art.

Carl Heyward

a Bay Area artist, is known for his vibrant and thought provoking mixed media artworks which have been featured in international exhibits, publications and on various online platforms. He is an art educator and National Endowment for the Arts Fellow; founder of Global Art Project, a member based international collaborative collective of mixed media artists.

Akiko Suzuki

is an award-winning Bay Area fiber artist whose work focuses on contemporary Japanese art quilts. She combines fiber art with painting, sculpture and installation art; her work concerns nature, identity, eros and cultural identity.

Julie Schumer

is a Santa Fe–based abstract painter whose work explores balance, structure, and emotional nuance through layered mark-making and collage.
